Three And A Half Months In
21 January 2025 11:03
The restoration project in the church has been going strong for over three months, and so much has been done already! Already three weeks into 2025, here’s a quick update on what’s happened so far:
The floor in the main part of the church (the nave and chancel) has been cleared, and any items that couldn’t be moved were carefully protected. Bricks were taken up and stored.
Excavations revealed some archaeological finds, which were all recorded.
Four new layers were added to the floor: a strong base layer, two layers of recycled foam glass (called glapor), and a geotextile fabric. Then, the first layer of limecrete was put down. These layers will help keep the church warm and protect it from damp.
We’ve also welcomed three new team members! They’re busy working behind the scenes on exciting plans for the next three years. Stay tuned to see what’s coming!
The builders from Bakers of Danbury are back after the holidays and have already started working hard. They’ve made timber frames to mark where the historic ledger stones will go back into the floor. These frames make sure the spots stay clear of limecrete and also guide where the underfloor heating and cables will be placed.
They’ve also been removing old pipes from the kitchen ceiling and planning where the new ones will go under the nave and chancel floors.
In the porch, the team has been digging and adding those same protective layers (glapor and geotextile). This week, they’ll dig out more of the chancel floor to prepare for new electrical cables. An archaeologist will be on-site to check for any important finds, and the new cables will arrive soon.
There’s lots happening, and we’re so excited to share more updates with you soon!
