Heritage At Risk
St Mary's, Stebbing, was placed on Historic England's "Heritage At Risk" register in 2019. It followed an inspection in which the following defects were cited:
- The aged underfloor heating installed in the nave, aisles and chancel was leaking and causing settlement of the clay floor bricks in various locations, causing trip hazards
- It was also primarily responsible for the excessive levels of salt migration around the walls, causing plaster to fall off
- The detachment, in places, of the sixteenth century painted text on the north aisle wall, which continues to deteriorate
The renovation programme will remedy these issues and enable St Mary's to be removed from the heritage at risk register.
